Have I come at a bad time?

‘No,’ he said, squinting into the small, cracked mirror as he tried to shave.

Think, don’t speak.

‘I’m trying, it’s just difficult to concentrate on your voice when I’m in danger of slicing my throat open. Give me a second, I’ve nearly finished.’

He tilted his neck and scraped the last of the growth from his chin. He wiped the blade and folded it, then sat on his small bunk, dabbing the soap on his face with a towel; his hair still dripping from the bath.

He heard Karalyn laugh in his head. Finished?

Aye.

Here, let’s try this.

He blinked as she appeared before him in the cramped bedchamber. On instinct he reached out his hand to touch her, but his fingers passed through air.

‘I’m just a vision,’ she said. ‘I’m making you see me.’

‘Shit, I thought you were really here for a second.’ He gazed at her. ‘How are the twins?’

‘Fine,’ she said. ‘Kyra’s sleeping a bit better; she managed seven hours last night. Cael was up though, so it wasn’t like I got any more sleep.’

‘They’ll be three thirds tomorrow,’ he said. ‘Seems so much longer.’

She nodded. ‘So how have you been?’

‘Busy,’ he said. ‘We just got back into harbour today, and we’re being sent back out again the day after tomorrow.’

‘I know,’ she said, ‘I spoke to Calder in the imperial capital. He told me about your re-assignment. Congratulations, Captain.’

‘Thanks.’

‘And you’re going to Amatskouri? You might see my brother there.’

‘What,’ he said, ‘Corthie’s back?’

‘No, the other brother. Keir. He survived Stretton Sands and fought Agatha’s army a few days ago. And listen, he’s got married to Thorn.’

‘Keir and Thorn?’

‘Aye. They had a big party in Amatskouri, thousands were out in the streets to watch, apparently. Mother’s raging.’

‘Why?’

Karalyn started to count on her fingers. ‘First, she’s never met Thorn, and the idea of her golden boy marrying someone she doesn’t know is driving her crazy. I had to remind her that her parents had never met my father when she was pregnant with me. Second, because Sanang can’t have children with Holdings or Kellach Brigdomin. You’d think three grandchildren would enough for her, but no. Third, she suspects that Thorn is trying to wheedle her way into the family, using poor, innocent Keir as an entry point into the Holdfasts. Can you believe that? As if anyone would want to join our mad family. Worst of all is that Keir didn’t tell her. My mother had to find out from Calder.’

‘I can see how all that would be a shock to her.’

‘You can imagine what she did; she visioned straight to Amatskouri, and had a huge row with Keir. She was weeping tears of fury when she snapped out of it, and hurled more than one of Shella’s crystal goblets against the wall. Then she got angry with me, because I wouldn’t take her there so she could speak to him in person.’

‘When did all this happen?’

‘About an hour ago.’ She smiled. ‘It’s good to speak to you.’

‘Aye. I just wish you weren’t a vision.
